Season 17 (2000-2001)

Season Changes:

• Season 17 of Jeopardy! kicks off on September 4, 2000.
• This season is both the last season to have the 1997-2001 theme, and the first season to have the 2001-2008 theme.
• This is the last full season to be produced by Columbia TriStar Television, who had been produced since Season 11.
• This is also the last season where Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are indicated by a WebTV interactive bug.
• The opening credits have changed to a blue background with sliding squares, and the silver Jeopardy! logo is formed on a yellow rectangle. Finally, the Jeopardy! logo then zooms forward, in which the "A" reveals the 1996-2002 set.
• The pink sliding doors were replaced into pale lavender.
• The categories for the Jeopardy! and the Double Jeopardy! round segments no longer flip over, but it now fades in.
• On early episodes of this season, the categories for the Jeopardy! and the Double Jeopardy! round segments flip over.
• A wind blowing sound was used, and the theme song is truncated at the start. This remained in use until the April 20, 2001 episode.
• Starting with this season, Johnny Gilbert no longer said "From the Sony Pictures Studios, this is Jeopardy!", so Johnny Gilbert's opening catchphrase changed back to say at the start of each episode, which is "This is Jeopardy!".
• The studio audience is no longer seen during Alex Trebek's entrance, in and out of commercial breaks, and during the closing credits.
• At the beginning of this season, the contestants no longer walk onto the set, they were already at their podiums.
• Also at the beginning of this season, Johnny Gilbert's opening catchphrase "Now entering the studio are today's contestants" was dropped, so Johnny Gilbert started using a rotation of five opening catchphrases, such as "Please welcome today's contestants" on Monday's episodes, "Introducing today's contestants" on Tuesday's episodes, "Here are today's contestants" on Wednesday's episodes, "Today's contestants are..." on Thursday's episodes, and "Let's meet today's contestants" on Friday's episodes.
• When the returning champion is introduced, his/her number of games won thus far is now shown onscreen.

This season:

• On the October 30-November 3, 2000 episodes, Brad Rutter became a five-time undefeated champion, accumulating $55,102.
• On the February 6-16 2001 episodes, four of five Celebrity Jeopardy! matches and the International Tournament are both held at the Hilton hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. On these episodes, the 2001-2008 theme had become a regular feature.
• The April 20, 2001 episode marks the last appearance of the 1997-2001 theme.
• On the April 23, 2001 episode, the 2001-2008 theme made its debut.
• The copyright notice had changed to a trademark notice, which continued to use it to this day.
• This is the first time, the Tournament of Champions were not held.
• On the September 18, 2000 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• The September 20, 2000 episode starts with three new players.
• On the September 25 and 29, 2000 episodes, three males play for the first and second times this season, this is the first time this season that three males play twice in a row, the former game is also the first all-male game since July 21, 2000.
• On the October 2-6, 2000 episodes, Back to School Week is held for the second time.
• On the October 11, 2000 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the November 3, 2000 episode, three males play for the third time this season.
• The November 6, 2000 episode starts with three new players, a male taking on two females
• On the November 24, 2000 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the December 13, 2000 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the December 21 and 22, 2000 episodes, there are two male contestants and one female contestant. This is the first time this season that a female champion plays against two male opponents twice in a row.
• On the December 25-29, 2000 episodes, Holiday Kids Week is held for the first time.
• The January 16, 2001 episode starts with three new players.
• On the January 25 and 26, 2001 episodes, three males play for the fourth and fifth times this season, this is the second time this season that three males play twice in a row.
• On the January 31, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the February 5, 2001 episode during Celebrity Jeopardy!, two male celebrities and one female celebrity play. And this is the only celebrity game taped in Culver City.
• On the February 21, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the March 6, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• The March 13, 2001 episode starts with three new players, a female taking on two males.
• On the March 15, 2001 episode, three males play for the sixth time this season.
• On the March 22 and 23, 2001 episodes, three males play for the seventh and eighth times this season. This is the third time this season that three males play twice in a row.
• On the March 27, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• The April 4, 2001 episode starts with three new players, a female taking on two males.
• On the April 6, 2001 episode, three males play for the ninth time this season.
• On the April 10, 2001 episode, three males play for the eleventh time this season.
• The April 11, 2001 episode starts with three new players, a female taking on two males.
• On the April 17, 2001 episode, three males play for the twelfth time this season.
• On the April 23, 2001 episode, there are two female contestants and one male contestant, Also, the 2001-2008 theme debuted.
• On the April 26, 2001 episode, three males play for the thirteenth time this season.
• On the May 17, 2001 episode, three males play for the fourteenth time this season.
• The May 23, 2001 episode starts with three new players.
• On the May 29, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the June 8, 2001 episode, three males play for the fifteenth time this season.
• On the June 12 and 14, 2001 episodes, three males play for the sixteenth and seventeenth times this season, this is the fourth time this season that three males play twice in a row.
• The June 15, 2001 episode starts with three new players.
• On the June 18, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the June 21, 2001 episode, three males play for the eighteenth time this season.
• On the June 26, 2001 episode, three males play for the nineteenth time this season.
• On the June 28, 2001 episode, there are two female contestants and one male contestant.
• On the July 2 and 6, 2001 episodes, three males play for the twentieth and twenty-first time this season, this is the fifth time this season that three males play twice in a row.
• On the July 3, 2001 episode, there are two female contestants and one male contestant.
• On the July 5, 2001 episode, there are two male contestants and one female contestant.
• On the July 13, 2001 episode, three males play for the twenty-second time this season.
• Season 17 of Jeopardy! wraps up on July 20, 2001.
• Summer reruns air from July 23-August 31, 2001 with replacement fee plugs. Reruns later air on weekends from 2001-2002.
