Season 40 (2023-2024)[]

Season Changes[]

  • New opening sequence: Various shots of the set include the lights dimming, the peach Jeopardy! logo in an empty audience, shots of the cameraman and the crew getting ready to go on the air, contestants making their entrance, announcer Johnny Gilbert putting his jacket on and introducing the show, and host Ken Jennings making his entrance to the studio before the Jeopardy! logo zooms out, with the blue globe with pink lands appearing on the right side of the blue space screen instead of the center. Then, the peach Jeopardy! logo zooms forward, revealing the 2013-2024 set; the opening sequence first appeared on the December 19, 2023 episode, when the Second Chance Tournament is held.
  • The cash for the runners-up is raised to $3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third place.
  • This season marks the debut for Champions Wildcard Tournament and Invitational Tournament.
  • Just like on Wheel of Fortune Bonus Rounds in Season 41, the fades that were present originally in the Syndicated version are replaced with cuts in the intro.
  • This is the first season where the camera zooms in on the host after Johnny Gilbert announces the three contestants playing in every episode.
  • Mayim Bialik left Jeopardy! at the beginning of this season, confirmed on December 15, 2023, with Ken Jennings becoming the sole host. This is the first full season in the post-Alex Trebek era to have only one permanent host.
  • On early episodes of this season:
    • The opening sequence from Season 38 and Season 39 was still used.
    • The social media credits still plug the show's official accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • On later episodes of this season, Twitter was replaced with X, and TikTok was added to the social media credits.
  • The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which began on May 2, 2023, as part of the Hollywood double strike ended on September 27, 2023, and the 2023 Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strike, which began on July 14, 2023 one month before the production of this season began, ended on November 9, 2023.
  • Celebrity Jeopardy upgraded to the following:
    • When a clue is selected, the rim around the category screen turns white. This doesn't carry over to the syndicated version until October 14, 2024.
    • Following the first clue of the round or the break, a 3-way split-screen of the celebs is used
    • It is the last season where the following occurs:
      • The subtitles advances to semifinals or finals are in double lines.
      • The globe is at the center of the screen and shows pictures of celebrities competing.
      • The color font for the amount earned for charities in all games is in blue font and white surroundings.
      • The graphic $1,000,000 for charity is 36 individual monitors.
    • It is the first season where the following occurs:
      • The primetime show recaps the show from the quarterfinal and semifinal matches. Johnny Gilbert says "Previously on Celebrity Jeopardy"
      • Celebrities who finish the Triple Jeopardy round in the red are given $500 to play Final Jeopardy.
      • An episode where five rounds are played.
      • The audience applauds coming out of the last commercial break.
    • It is also the only season where the celebrity's job and location are announced in the quarterfinals intro.
    • It is also the only season where Johnny Gilbert just announces the shows the celebrities appeared on in the semifinals or finals.
  • This is the first Jeopardy Masters season where the category is highlighted on the clue selection
  • This is the last Jeopardy Masters season where Johnny Gilbert says "Last time on Jeopardy Masters" when recapping a episode.
  • This is the last season for both Jeopardy Masters and Primetime Celebrity Jeopardy where the board has 36 individual clues.
  • The Sony Pictures Television logo returns, transitioning from the 2021 Sony logo. This also happens on sister show Wheel of Fortune.
  • Johnny no longer announces the next day's contestants during the closing credits after Ken signs off.
  • This is the second season to have less regular game play with just 78 episodes due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike and the 2023 Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strike as part of the Hollywood double strike.
