Season 5 (1988-1989)[]

Season Changes[]

  • The opening credits remains the same as the rest of Season 3.
  • On early episodes of this season, the first 19 seconds of the 1984-1992 theme was still played.
  • On later episodes of this season, the first 19 seconds of the 1984-1992 theme was removed.
  • This is the last season where Alex didn't wear any glasses throughout the whole show.
  • Starting with this season, the copyright card has changed its color to the shrunken Jeopardy! logo in gold, with many blue backgrounds varying depending on the episode.
  • This is the only season overall in which the words on the graphics used on the show were off-center, as pictured above.

  • September 5, 1988: Season 5 premieres.
  • September 27, 1988: Chris Shea retires with $35,202 despite losing his fifth game.

  • November 7-18, 1988: The Tournament of Champions airs. Mark Lowenthal won the Tournament of Champions.

  • December 29, 1988: Jeff Richmond retires undefeated with $58,302.
  • December 30, 1988: The episode with the show #1000 aired on this date, which in reality is actually the 935th episode.

January 1989[]

  • January 5, 1989: Cigus Vanni retires undefeated with $40,400.
  • January 17, 1989: Peggi Malys retires with $36,800 despite losing her fifth game.
  • January 20, 1989: Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune do not air because the inaguration of United States president George H.W. Bush was televised.
  • January 26, 1989: Brian Wangsgard retires undefeated with $62,398.
  • January 30, 1989: Footage from the episode was featured in the 1992 film Breaking the Rules.

February 1989[]

  • February 6-17, 1989: The Teen Tournament airs. Eric Newhouse won the tournament.

  • March 10, 1989: Alex enters wearing a hard hat, explaining it is to protect himself against items falling from the rafters, as a chain and an electric wire had fallen the previous show.
  • March 29, 1989: The players were introduced already standing in position.
  • March 31, 1989: The real 1,000th episode of Jeopardy! aired on this date, which show #1,065.

  • April 5, 1989: Jim Tompkins-MacLaine retires with $41,002 despite losing his fifth game.
  • April 14, 1989: The 1,000th taped episode of Jeopardy! aired on this date, which aired as the 1,010th episode, or Show #1075.
